Modern Defense is called differently by various Chess Players. It is also termed as Kotov Defense, Pirc Defense, Ufimtsev Defense, Robatsch Defense or even King’s Fianchetto Defense. This concept was originated in 1920s and adopted by many players in 1930s and classified as hyper-modern openings.
The main concept behind Modern defense is to foregoing Black to early occupation with centralized pawns. 2 Bishops: Bishops are diagonal movers and limited to one color. It can move to any number of diagonal squares.
8 Pawns: Pawn moves a single square at a time and can go only forward. It can move one step diagonally, if it has to capture any chess piece on the particular location. Pawn can be exchanged for any other chess piece on reaching the end of the board. It can take two straight steps on opening move.
Two rooks are placed on lower corners of the squares and followed by knights and bishops. Queen is placed matching its color; meaning White Queen will be placed on White Square and same is the case with Black Queen. Pawns are placed on second row of the court of the King.
